The Roughan and O’Donovan-FaberMaunsell (now AECOM) Alliance were appointed as the Civil and Structural Engineers for this highly innovative design of a new railway station in the Dublin Docklands area. The programme for the entire project was ten months, which included the application for the planning permission through to completion of construction works to a fully operational rail station.

There are a number of innovative features that have been built into the design of this station. It was originally intended that the station could be removed in 10 years time and in order to facilitate this requirement, all elements of the structure were designed to be completely demountable with a minimum of demolition work. Groundworks on the site were minimised by the use of a combination of Rolling Dynamic Compaction for the main platform and precast piles for the station building. This resulted in a minimum of excavated material needing to be removed from the site.

The main station building comprised an unbraced structural steelwork frame. We were also responsible for producing shop fabrication drawings for the complicated curved steelwork that makes up the station roofs and for assisting Iarnród Éireann procuring the steelwork in advance of appointing the steelwork Contractor Another important element of any project in such a built-up area is the acoustic levels for surrounding developments. In order to address this issue we worked closely with a specialist environmental sub-consultant during the project to ensure that the levels of noise to the surrounding properties were within acceptable limits.
