Client: Louth County Council
Project Value: €20 million
The proposed Narrow Water Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge (total span 300 meters) with a rolling bascule opening span, which makes a unique and historic bridge crossing between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The bridge has been selected to blend into the surrounding landscape while mitigating the impact on cultural heritage and sensitive environment in the vicinity of the crossing.
The proposed bridge will link the Cooley Peninsula in County Louth with the Mourne District in County Down, enhancing the tourist potential and assisting in the cross-border social economic development of the region. In addition, the bridge is required to open to accommodate the existing and future maritime traffic including tall ships. Roughan & O'Donovan is engaged by Louth County Council to undertake engineering consultancy services including constraints study and route selection, feasibility study, environmental impact assessment and preliminary design, Preparation of EIS / CPO / Vesting, Detailed Design & Construction Supervision of the bridge.
Design Features: Incorporates a rolling bascule opening span over the main navigation channel.
Innovations & Challenges: Due to the cross border nature of this project we are undertaking planning approval procedures in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland under UK legislation. The area is highly environmentally designated including a cSAC, ASSI, pNHA and adjacent to an SPA.
